Perched atop the Youghiogheny Scenic & Wild River Corridor with magnificent views of the river valley and surrounding Allegheny Mountains in Western Maryland, the Kendall Retreat provides the perfect wilderness escape, while located only a short drive from many vacation activities, exciting attractions, and fine restaurants. The three-bedroom vacation rental cabin is built into the flank of Elder Hill Mountain south of Friendsville at an elevation of 1,960 feet. Surrounded by 12 forested acres and contiguous to the wild river corridor, the cabin provides the private setting and ideal location for a relaxing yet action-packed, outdoors vacation with your family or friends.

Tastefully furnished, the cabin features three bedrooms, with two queen-size beds, a double bed, and a twin bed; an open living space, with the living room, dining room, and kitchen housed within a single great room; and a fully equipped kitchen, with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, providing comfortable accommodations for up to seven guests. An expansive deck wraps around the open living space, which features wall-size windows, giving access to the homes charming mountain view from both inside and outside the cabin.

On-site, guests can stroll the grounds on trails around the cabin, sit around the boulder-ringed fire pit, have a ping-pong tournament on the basement table, play the numerous board games provided, watch the DirectTV/Roku-enabled flat-screen television, or just sit and relax. Energetic, adventurous guests may want to hike down to the river through wilderness along steep, undesignated trails to visit the abandoned ghost town of Kendall, for which the cabin is named (approximately 2 miles away with an elevation drop of 460 feet).

Off-site activities include boating at Deep Creek Lake and skiing at the Wisp Resort (both only a 10-minute drive away); hiking the area's numerous mountain trails; fishing the region's many lakes and streams; whitewater rafting, mountain biking, horseback riding, golfing, hunting, and much more.

This property is monitored remotely for safety and security when no one is present. The monitoring devices are turned off upon guest arrival and not turned on again until guest departure. All monitoring is performed outside of the cabin, and all cameras point away from the cabin at all times.

wonderful views. Gorgeous. Clean

By: Trip Date: 12/30/2021

This is a beautiful and charming cabin with wonderful views of the mountains. The cabin is gorgeous, extremely clean, and the ping pong table and games gave us a lot to do on a rainy day. Tina and Robert were kind and communicative hosts. We only wished the cabin was a bit farther away from the busy highway–we like complete quiet, especially when vacationing in the mountains. The noise wasn’t a big bother, we just would prefer a bit more privacy and quiet.

Stocked Kitchen. Fireplace rocked

By: Trip Date: 01/18/2022

We had such a wonderful stay at the cabin! The place was stocked well in the kitchen and came ready with linens on the bed. The fireplace was so nice to relax by! Would absolutely come again.

As expected with everything needed

By: Trip Date: 04/08/2022

Thanks for a wonderful weekend at Kendall Retreat. Everything was as expected and excellent communication. Kitchen/dining room/living room had everything you need and made for a great gathering space. Basement wasn’t used as much but we did like the video system/ping pong. And we really liked the outside areas. Deck/firepit had a great view of the valley/mountains/wildlife. Lots of hiking/dining/activity suggestions in the cabin. We all enjoyed the 3 waterfall hike. I would recommend bringing a camp chair or similar for around the firepit. The rocks are a nice touch, but uncomfortable after a while. Thanks again, we would definitely return.

Great Family Vaca at Kendall

By: Trip Date: 04/19/2022

We had a great family vacation at the Kendal Retreat. The two queen sized beds were very comfortable and there was plenty of space for 6 of us. The decks are wonderful and we enjoyed the wood burning fireplace in the evenings. The kitchen was well equipped for those who like to cook. As other reviews have stated, the water us hard so bring plenty of drinking water. I would recommend it for anyone.

Spacious and convenient

This a GREAT home with lots of conveniences + many extras. Spacious, clean, a great view and location, a usable fireplace, and very comfortable beds! I will gladly return if in the area again!

Thoroughly enjoyed our quiet weekend.

By: Trip Date: 10/21/2021

This was the perfect location for a long, quiet weekend. We managed to time it perfectly and enjoyed all of the fall colors. The game selection was pretty vast and we thoroughly enjoyed our time spent here. Would highly recommend this location for a quiet getaway or for a lake stay if you don’t want to be in the hustle of lake traffic

Very clean and neat home

By: Trip Date: 10/09/2021

Very clean and neat, great layout with well thought out directions for everything in the cabin!

New Year’s getaway

By: Trip Date: 12/29/2019

The cabin was beautiful and in a great location. Close to Wisp and restaurants, but still secluded. We really enjoyed putting together the 1,000 piece puzzle!

Amazing

By: Trip Date: 03/01/2019

Love, love, loved it and will definitely be returning! The house was immaculate, the management company was awesome, the cabin was well stocked with extra blankets and all, very relaxing, perfect view, not far from the stores and attractions, the on call guy Mike was awesome, we loved it, and shall return… Thank you for having us.

Gorgeous setting

By: Trip Date: 09/13/2019

We would absolutely recommend this beautiful home. It’s beautiful, well appointed and in a gorgeous setting. Great communication through and very responsive when we had questions!

Summer weekend

By: Trip Date: 07/19/2019

Awesome spot for a summer weekend! Nearby the lake and plenty of room for our group of six. Would happily return year after year!

Great amenities

By: Trip Date: 01/05/2018

The house itself was even better than the photos. We had an issue with the fire alarm battery dying so it was beeping and they had someone out with a big ladder to fix it within the hour. Great amenities. We will 100% be back!

Weekend ski trip

By: Trip Date: 02/02/2018

Perfect for a ski weekend at Wisp. This house is nicely finished with a wood burning fireplace that was great for six adults to spend time in after a day of skiing. You will need a 4×4 to get up the driveway after snowfall.

Nice quiet getaway

By: Trip Date: 03/09/2018

We spent the weekend at Kendall Retreat and it far exceeded our expectations! The cabin is absolutely beautiful and the owners thought of everything. The cabin is well stocked, plenty of extra blankets, just about anything you need in the kitchen and even a closet filled with games! We had three adults and three children and more than enough room. We would highly recommend Kendall Retreat to anyone looking for a nice quiet getaway with some beautiful scenery.

Close to Deep Creek Lake

By: Trip Date: 08/17/2018

A wonderful, romantic location. The house is enough in and of itself to have an amazing getaway— 10 minutes away from Deep Creek Lake is the icing on the cake!! Owners indeed thought of everything you might need on your stay— from household items, to Bluetooth speakers and the most adorable personal touches. We truly loved staying there. I think of all the Airbnbs I have experienced— this one is my favorite!

Response:
Thank you so much for your kind words and we are very happy that you had a good experience. While we do have to utilize a 3rd party company to ensure we stay in compliance with the County/State (don’t want to lose our license to rent) we will talk with them about their systems to try to keep the ‘administration’ part as seamless as possible. Thanks for being our guest Cara and we so look forward to hosting you at Kendall Retreat again someday!

Family getaway

By: Trip Date: 08/31/2018

Great place for a family get away and nice hiking tails nearby. Wonderful suggestions that helped us enjoy our stay. Also, the home was very comfortable and clean.

Response:
So very glad you had a lovely visit and we thank you for being our guest. We look forward to hosting you again someday – there are still some great Autumn weekends available!

Feels remote and tucked away

By: Trip Date: 10/05/2018

Feels remote and tucked away, yet is moments from I68. Very clean, stylish, and comfortable. Great location, great value, 10/10 would go there again. In fact, we’re likely going to make it an annual getaway spot.

Lovely cabin

By: Trip Date: 12/27/2018

We had a wonderful stay at this well-equipped, comfy and lovely cabin. It was the perfect size for our group of 6, we went and explore nature and snow sports nearby.

Response:
Julie, thank you for your feedback and for being such wonderful guests and the care you took of Kendall Retreat! We look forward to hosting you again – check us out in the Spring when the hiking trails to the nearby Yough River open up!

Weekend getaway

By: Trip Date: 04/12/2019

The perfect place for our weekend getaway! A short drive to Deep Creek and Swallow Falls, horseback riding, and so much more. Thank you for everything! We will definitely be back!

Response:
You took great care of the cabin and we very much look forward to your visit again and, hopefully, you can stay a bit longer next time to really explore our awesome area!

Relaxing weekend!

By: Trip Date: 05/24/2019

We thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend at Kendall Retreat! The cabin was clean and comfortable with everything we needed for our stay. It is close to many amenities (grocery store, restaurants, recreation) and easily accessed from the highway. I recommend bringing bottled water if you aren’t used to the taste of well water. There were many large ants in the cabin but traps were placed throughout and most of our group wasn’t bothered by them. We would happily return to Kendall Retreat to enjoy another relaxing weekend and explore the many recreational opportunities western Maryland has to offer!

Response:
Thank you and your family for being our guest and we do appreciate the care you took with the cabin! Certainly those pesky ants have been a bit more of a nuisance this year than previous years but we are optimistic that the pest treatment spray application done after your visit should have remedied this. I was at the cabin earlier today getting it ready for this weekend’s guests and noted that the treatment/traps seem to have done their job! We look forward to hosting you again on your next visit to the area! Thanks for being our guest…

Kendall Retreat @ Deep Creek Lake
Public feedback
The Kendall retreat was a great place to stay for a secluded setting. It is located off the main road so there was some road noise when outside, but sitting on the deck overlooking the wooded area was peaceful. It was a lodge type setting with plenty of space for our two families (7 people). We also enjoyed spending the evenings around the fire pit. The location is a short drive to Deep Creek and just down the road from Friendsville where we hiked along the river.
Manager Response
Awesome! So glad you took advantage of the ‘Wild and Scenic Corridor’ of the Yough River – our State did a great job of protecting the pristine nature that this river offers. We thank you for being our guest and look forward to hosting you again someday!
