The entire experience lasts 2 hours, which includes about 30 minutes of gearing and safety orientation. An average trip includes at least 4 descents down the course. ASCI guides will lead guests through everything from a straight shot of the rapids to surfing holes, to grabbing eddies and otherwise learning the basics of maneuvering a raft in whitewater. While the focus is on the pure thrill and challenge of whitewater, guests should gain insight into the nature of whitewater hydraulics, technical raft guiding, eddy snagging, surfing and basic whitewater safety. Depending on the group, willing guests will be allowed to ‘co-guide’ the raft.

Herrington Manor State Park

301-334-9180Located within Garrett State Forest in Garrett County, Herrington Manor State Park’s development began in the 1930’s with the aid of the Civilian Conservation Corps. A 53-acre lake was formed by damming Herrington Creek, and ten cabins were erected on a wooded knoll above the lake. Herrington Manor was designed as a state park in 1964, and encompasses 365 acres. The park offers swimming, boating in rowboats, canoes and paddle boats, picnicking, hiking, tennis and volleyball. Interpretive programs are scheduled during the summer; and popular special events such as maple syrup demonstrations and apple butter making are held throughout the year.
New Germany State Park

Big Savage Mountain to the east and the eastern Continental Divide along Meadow Mountain to the west. Named by early settlers due to its resemblance to their homeland, New Germany has diverse forests with ten miles of multi-use trails and a small lake suitable for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. This park is ideal for families and individuals looking to ‘unplug’ from a tech-reliant society and escape from the busy pace of life in cities and suburbs.
Savage River State Forest

Trail maps are available at the forest office, for all trails, including the 10 miles of cross country ski trails. The forest is classified as a mixed hardwood forest. More than 12,000 acres of the forest has been designated as Wildlands.
Garrett State Forest

Potomac State Forest

Mountain forests, streams and valleys make up nearly 12,000 acres in Potomac State Forest. The forest drains into the Potomac River Basin, and features the highest point in any Maryland state forest – Backbone Mountain, elevation 3,220 feet. Another high point in the forest is the rock outcropping near the intersection of Maryland Route 135 and Walnut Bottom Road which overlooks a portion of Potomac State Forest, Savage River State Forest and Crabtree Creek.
